National Influenza Vaccination Week, Why Every Year Counts

first_imgflickr-cc-itsv-taken-on-october-29-2008By Joanna ManeroNational Influenza Vaccination Week December 4-10.  It is truly a privilege to be alive in a time when we have vaccines that can prevent a number of illnesses.  Most vaccines provide antibodies for our body to fight off diseases that are effective for a number of years, or even a lifetime.  However, the flu shot is one that we should renew annually.  In fact, the CDC recommends that U.S. healthcare workers get vaccinated every year.  During the 2014-2015 season, 75% of healthcare workers received the flu vaccination.  Although this number is higher than past years, it is lower than the target of 90% set by the Healthy People 2020. Annual renewal is recommended because the viruses responsible for the flu are different each year.  The vaccine is designed to protect against three or four viruses that research indicates will be the likely cause of the flu that particular year. The decision of which viruses to protect from each year is one that is not taken lightly.  The World Health Organization (WHO) collaborates with essential regulatory laboratories and representatives of key national laboratories and academies from all over the world to review the results of clinical, laboratory, and surveillance studies.  The WHO then recommends which viruses are likely problematic for the next season.  The final decision of inclusion is taken by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).Vaccination is recommended as soon as it becomes available for the season, preferably by October.  Immunity takes about two weeks, so early vaccination is encouraged.  However, it is not too late to get your flu shot if you haven’t already.  The flu can start as early as October but the peak season isn’t until January, or sometimes even later. So why may some people choose to go without the vaccine?  Several widespread myths surround the vaccine.  Some common myths are:You can catch the flu from the vaccine- This is probably the most common myth. The flu shot contains inactivated viruses that cannot transmit infection.  Immunity takes two weeks to set, and people may catch the flu during the two-week period following the vaccine. However, the vaccine is not the source of the flu.The flu is just a bad cold- Although the flu may give you cold-like symptoms, it can be more deadly. In the United States, 36,000 people die from the flu, and 200,000 are hospitalized each year from the flu.You don’t need a flu shot every year- As stated above, different viruses are responsible for the flu each year. Yearly vaccination is essential.Healthy people don’t need the vaccine- Although vaccination is heavily encouraged for people with chronic illness or who are frail, healthy people can see benefits from routine vaccination. What are other myths that you have heard against getting a yearly flu shot?  Leave us a comment, and we can attempt to debunk them!  Although Flu prevention is the main reason people choose to receive the vaccine, it is not the only benefit.Vaccination reduces flu-associated hospitalization for children and older, people with type 2 diabetes, and chronic lung diseaseVaccination was associated with less cardiac events in people with heart disease, or other cardiac conditions within the last year.Vaccination is also important for the protection of pregnant women and the developing baby. Immunity is passed to the newborn for the first several months of life.Vaccination can also reduce your symptoms if you get ill, giving you a milder illness. And finallyVaccination creates protection not only for you but those around you. With all of these incredible benefits and the widespread availability of the Influenza Vaccination, there is no excuse to skip a year.  Make sure you get vaccinated if you haven’t, and encourage others to do the same! How do you help your friends and family to get the flu shot? No flu shot yourself yet?  What is  your excuse? was posted by Robin Allen, a member of the Military Families Learning Network (MFLN) Nutrition and Wellness team that aims to support the development of professionals working with military families.  Find out more about the MFLN Nutrition and Wellness concentration on our website, on Facebook, on Twitter, and LinkedIn.last_img read more

Former Restaurant Owner Fined for Exploiting Indian Cook in Australia

first_imgA former owner of an Indian restaurant in Perth, Australia, was penalized for more than A$200,000 for not paying a cook, who was an Indian national, for months. The cook was also fired by the owner through a text message for taking a sick leave.Simon Peter Mackenzie was the owner of The Curry Tree restaurant at Nedlands, Perth, before it was destroyed in a fire in 2014, reported Mirage News. He had not given the cook his salary for many months, while also threatening him that he would sue him for defamation and would get him arrested by the police. The details of the case emerged on March 26, according to“There will be no apology at all,” Mackenzie, an Australian national, said at the Federal Circuit Court while facing legal action by the Fair Work Ombudsman. He was fined A$34,815 and his company, Siner Enterprises Pty Ltd, was fined another sum of A$174,075, reported Business Insider.Mackenzie and his company were also ordered by the court to pay the 24-year-old cook his dues. The cook, whose name has not been revealed, started work at Mackenzie’s restaurant in 2012. He is on a bridging visa in Australia. The total amount of outstanding wages and compensation due to him amounted to A$32,661.For the first few days of work, the cook was paid A$200 in cash. However, for the next four months, when he worked six evenings per week, he did not receive any pay.Judge Antoni Lucev said that he had “cause for serious concern” for anyone hired by Mackenzie or by any firm he is associated with.“Mr Mackenzie went so far as to suggest that (the worker) might have somehow had an involvement in events, or events which led to, the burning down of the restaurant, an assertion which was simply not the subject of any evidence whatsoever,” Judge Lucev said, according to Business Insider. When a text message was sent to Mackenzie by the worker, saying that he was ill and would not be able to come to work and that he would bring a medical certificate the next day, Mackenzie replied in a series of text messages where he fired the cook. One of the text messages said: “Don’t come back.”The worker was initially unwilling to complain as he was hoping to be sponsored by Mackenzie’s company on a work visa that would allow him to stay in Australia. After he was sacked from work, he lodged a complaint. The Fair Work Ombudsman, an independent statutory agency of the Australian government, began an investigation and legal action was launched. At the hearing, Mackenzie said that he had not committed any violations of workplace laws. However, the court found that Mackenzie as well as his company did commit all the violations that the Fair Work Ombudsman had alleged, according to Mirage News.Natalie James of Fair Work Ombudsman said that the decision of the court sent out a clear message that consequences for exploiting foreign workers in Australia intentionally are serious. “This case involved shameful exploitation of a vulnerable worker and the employer’s conduct in this matter thoroughly deserved the strong criticisms it received from the Court. Migrant and overseas workers in Australia are lawfully entitled to the same minimum wages and conditions as any other worker,” James said.“Employers should be aware that we treat cases involving underpayment of visa holders and young workers particularly seriously because we know they can be vulnerable due to a lack of awareness of their entitlements, language barriers and a reluctance to complain,” she added. One of the best moments of my career, says Sindhu

first_imgRELATED COMMENT × Rio 2016: Faster, Higher, Stronger Published on SHARE SHARE EMAIL COMMENTS Sindhu storms into semi-finals; Narsingh’s dope saga continuescenter_img sport August 17, 2016 sind sind SHARE A visibly elated PV Sindhu rated her win over London Olympics silver medalist Yihan Wang as one of the best moments of her career hoping that she could maintain her good form against Japanese Nozomi Okuhara in the semi-finals of the Rio Olympics.Asked about her initial feelings, Sindhu said: “This is also the Rio Olympics, it’s a very different feeling. It’s one of the best moments. I hope there will be many more to come,” the World No 10 said after her 22-20 21-19 victory to become the second Indian after Saina Nehwal to reach the last four at the Olympics.Queried about the pressure of winning an Olympic medal for India in these difficult times, she said: “I was just thinking about the game. If you play really well you will automatically win the game, and a medal. I’m just focused on my match and the next match, the semis (against Okuhara). I hope I can give my best.”Seven years younger to the Chinese, the two-time world championship bronze medallist trailed 10—12 and was 20—20 but she maintained her calm to win two points and take an intense first game.Sindhu attributed the win to her patience, which helped her win crucial points when the much fancied Chinese rival was retrieving everything she threw at her.“There were big rallies, she was attacking well. My smashes were going out initially. Even she did not leave and she was lifting everything. I was really patient and I was ready for everything, which I feel was the turning point.”“I never thought I would lose this, because any moment anything can change. It was not so easy to get points, both of us fought for every point. It was very close. In the first game it was 20-all and I felt even though I was leading I never thought the game was over. She came really close, even she played brilliantly,” she said.last_img read more

Serie A: Discriminatory Chants Mar Roma’s 2-1 Win Over Napoli

first_imgRome: A brief suspension for discriminatory chants marred Roma’s 2-1 win over struggling Napoli in Serie A on Saturday.Referee Gianluca Rocchi made the decision in the second half after Roma fans aimed anti-territorial chants – which are treated in the same manner as racist chants – at Napoli. The game resumed after a few minutes. Rocchi had already ordered an announcement to be made over the Stadio Olimpico’s public address system asking fans to stop the chants.During the suspension, Rocchi gathered teams in the center circle, then Roma forward Edin Dzeko went over and encouraged fans to applaud rather than jeer the opposition.Roma led 2-0 at the time of the suspension with goals from Nicolò Zaniolo and Jordan Veretout.Shortly after the interruption, Arkadiusz Milik pulled one back for Napoli.Roma extended its unbeaten run to six matches and moved up to third place, one point ahead of Atalanta, which hosts Cagliari on Sunday.Napoli, which has earned just three points in its last five matches, dropped to seventh.Zaniolo put the hosts ahead with a shot from the edge of the area early on and Veretout added a second-half penalty. Also, Aleksandar Kolarov had a first-half penalty saved by Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret then Roma defender Chris Smalling cleared a dangerous effort off the goal line with a bicycle kick.Napoli also hit the goal frame twice on a single action in a fast-paced first half, while Roma’s Justin Kluivert hit the bar after the break.Milik redirected a cross at the far post for Napoli’s goal, finishing off a swift counterattack.Roma ended with 10 men when Mert Çetin picked up his second yellow for a foul on Fernando Llorente. Milik’s ensuing free-kick seven minutes into stoppage time was deflected way over the goal. chantsNapoliracismroma First Published: November 2, 2019, 11:48 PM IST Get the best of News18 delivered to your inbox – subscribe to News18 Daybreak. World Cup 2019: How Pakistan defied odds to shock overconfident England

first_imgMercurial, Unpredictable, Erratic, Fickle – all adjectives that have been used to define the Pakistan cricket team over the years. Their ability to bounce back from the depths of despair to trump the strongest of oppositions on any given day makes them the quintessential thriller story of the modern game. Be it the 1992 World cup win, the annihilation of arch-rivals India in the Champions Trophy 2017 final or yesterday’s stunning victory over World Cup 2019 hosts and favourites England, Pakistan have provided ample proof of their bouncebackability in their rich cricketing history. On Monday against England in Trent Bridge, it was no exception.Having been bowled out for a mere 105 runs against West Indies in their opening match of the World Cup 2019, no one gave Pakistan a chance against England on a pitch that has seen some of the highest team totals in ODI history being recorded in recent years. The expectations from the team were so low that a few cricket experts had started speculating if England would break their own previous record of the highest-ever ODI team total. But it should be noted that this lack of belief in the team wasn’t just due to their loss in the WC opener.Pakistan had lost their last 11 completed ODIs defeats before Trent Bridge, excluding the 3-wicket loss against Afghanistan in their first warm-up game of the World Cup. And when they surrendered meekly to the bouncer-barrage from the West Indians on May 31, fans and experts alike were quick to dismiss their chances going into Trent Bridge.advertisementThe strip used in Trent Bridge, Nottingham for Pakistan’s clash against England was the same where the hosts had twice broken the record for the highest ever ODI total – 481 for 6 against Australia in 2018 and 444 for 3 against Pakistan in 2016. There won’t be any escape for Pakistan, is what the predictions were as experts claimed that England bowlers must have sniffed Sarfaraz Ahmed and Co.’s susceptibility to the short ball and were likely to exploit it on Monday.Unpredictability aside, history was also not in Pakistan’s favour. England had not lost while chasing at home in almost 4 years and with the kind of batting prowess they possessed, no total looks beyond their reach. Pakistan, themselves were aware of that, having ended up as losers despite scoring 361, 358, 340 and 297 during their recent whitewash against England. On Monday, Pakistan had within their ranks 2 bowlers – Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz – who were not in their WC plans even a month ago. Riaz, in fact, hadn’t played for Pakistan in the intervening period between the Champions Trophy 2017 final and Pakistan’s opening game against West Indies on May 31.They also had in Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik – two of the oldest players in the current World Cup. While being experienced, scoring at a high strike-rate is not something Hafeez has been known for in his career. Malik, on the other hand, had an average of 14 with the bat in ODIs in England. The duo was also picked to fulfill the role of a sixth bowler if required. And then there was the aspect of the game that is the least talked about when predicting outcomes – fielding. To be fair, Pakistan have never been the best fielding side but on Monday when Babar Azam dropped Joe Root on 9, it looked like their perennial weakness in the field is going to haunt them again.Thankfully for Pakistan, England matched them in their fielding efforts conceding 17 extra runs via 13 misfields, with their real nadir being the costly drop of Mohammad Hafeez by Jason Roy when the latter had just scored 14.After being put into bat, Pakistan openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman showed the required resolve to put up 82 for the 1st wicket which was a solid foundation for the incoming batsmen to set sights on a big total. Hafeez and Safaraz batted with caution, punishing every bad delivery while running between the wickets as if their lives depended on it.Amir and Riaz, who leaked 149 runs in their combined 20 overs, took 5 wickets between them with the former picking the biggest prize of them all – Jos Buttler just when Pakistan needed it the most. Hafeez and Malik too proved their worth while bowling, as they dismissed the lynchpins, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes, respectively. In conclusion, it wasn’t exactly a dominant performance from Pakistan as both sides were guilty of committing crucial mistakes. Also, as former England captain Nasser Hussain had said recently reminded everyone that ‘World Cup 2019 will be the first time England face real home pressure’, the expectations of the British public from their team of world-beaters must have played a role too. Essentially, Pakistan didn’t set a marker on how to beat England but the fact that they were able to do it despite the odds stacked hugely against them, is a sign that England are not unbeatable. For some teams, that alone should be enough.advertisementAlso Read | World Cup 2019: MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul sizzle on Southampton streetsAlso Read | World Cup 2019: Team India to don orange jersey in clash against Englandlast_img read more

Moroccos Imports of Russian Wheat Increase by 300

Casablanca – Morocco’s imports of wheat from Russia has increased by 300 percent over the last season, indicating a new level of economic cooperation between Morocco and Russia. Morocco’s importation of wheat quadrupled during the previous season. This increase was due primarily to the poor agricultural year 2015-2016 which resulted from draught.According to Ukrainian agricultural consultant, UkrAgroConsult, Russia shipped nearly 650,000 tons of wheat between July 2016 and January 2017. This represents four times Russia’s average shipment to the kingdom. In its analytical report, the firm explained that this significant increase in the import of wheat followed Morocco’s poor harvest in the previous season. The increase in commercial transactions can also be explained by the increased collaboration between the two countries. Previously, Morocco had been importing its wheat from European and American Markets, which were capable of meeting Morocco’s local demand of wheat. After Morocco’s Monarch, King Mohammed VI, visited Russia last March, a number of cooperative agreements between the two countries were signed. At the time, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov, told the press that the agreements would further strengthen the strategic partnership between Morocco and Russia. read more

Sony Bricked PS3s have to wait until the 27th for fix

first_imgIf you were negatively affected by the last PS3 update, the good news is there’s a fix on the way. The bad news is you’re going to be waiting a little while. What started out as a minor update for the PS3 has ended in a number of users left without a console for a little while. The 4.45 version update affected a number of PS3 units such that they system would fail to boot fully. There have been a few recovery methods located — such as booting into safe mode on the console and either formatting your hard drive or attempting to restore the file system — though neither hasn’t been officially confirmed to work. Some gamers have even swapped the drive out entirely to get the console up and running. Either way, if you take these measures you’re probably out some precious game saves and you’ll need to reinstall everything. If you’re patient, it looks like Sony will have a fix. All you have to do is wait until the 27th.Sony’s Twitter account announced recently that they had finally discovered what turned this minor update into bad times for some of their customers, and they are now working on a fix. This fix is expected to be issued on June 27th, but there’s no explanation as to how this update will be issued. Presumably, users will need to boot into safe mode and either apply the update manually. Since the PS3 forces users to only install firmware that is newer than the current version the have, if you have a console that was affected by this update you can either wipe your system and destroy your game data or wait for this update and hope your game saves are still around when it happens.last_img read more

Authorization Bill Would Update GoldwaterNichols Reforms

first_imgThe House version of the fiscal 2017 defense authorization bill attempts to update the landmark 1986 Goldwater-Nichols Act by imposing a handful of changes to DOD’s organizational structure and how it formulates strategy. The legislation, which was approved last week by the House Armed Services Committee, would extend the term of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from two years to four and stagger it so that it bridges consecutive administrations. It also expands the advisory role of the chairman “to provide independent advice on ongoing operations and on the allocation and transfer of forces across regions to bridge service and COCOM [combatant command] boundaries,” according to a summary of the measure. The bill calls for a revamped national military strategy “identifying ways, ends and means to support the secretary’s strategy and the president’s national security objectives and to synchronize individual COCOM plans.”Separately, the annual defense policy bill would eliminate the mandatory quadrennial defense review (QDR) and, instead, establish a defense strategy commission as an independent panel of bipartisan national security experts appointed by the Armed Services committees. That panel would make recommendations for the nation’s defense strategy at the outset of an administration. The defense secretary would then be required to issue defense strategic guidance every four years setting force structure and resource priorities.Critics of the QDR have said it’s a labor-intensive exercise that rarely changes the status quo, reported CQ Roll Call. The measure would make U.S. Cyber Command an independent major command, a move Defense Secretary Ash Carter already is considering. It now is a subordinate component to U.S. Strategic Command. In addition, it directs the Government Accountability Office to study the current arrangement under which the head of Cyber Command also is director of the National Security Agency. The committee attempts to streamline military headquarters by barring geographic commanders, such as those who run military operations in the Middle East or the Pacific, from having four-star commanders for land, sea or air operations serving under them. The change is expected to shrink staffing levels at combatant command headquarters, according to CQ.The legislation is available on the committee website. Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

Panasonic cancels Jungle handheld gaming device

first_imgThe world of handheld gaming devices has been quite active recently. Nintendo is launching the 3DS in multiple territories, Sony has given us the first details of the PSP 2, and there’s a new Pokemon game out in a few days. With all this going on you’d be forgiven for forgetting about a new handheld device being developed by Panasonic called the Jungle. It was originally announced in October of last year and was going to focus exclusively on allowing gamers to play MMOs and other online games away from their PC. It was effectively going to be a handheld PC giving you access to popular games like World of Warcraft on the go.I was sceptical at the time, and now it seems Panasonic has realized Jungle wasn’t viable. The Japanese company decided its new strategy of focusing on environmental technology and healthcare meant gaming hardware wasn’t worth pursuing anymore.Read more at ReutersMatthew’s OpinionThe Jungle never sounded like a device that could be popular. It was a handheld device for running PC games which is already catered for by laptops and netbooks. Why would anyone want to go smaller than that and invest in another device to do it?The draw of playing your favorite MMO while mobile may be enough to tempt a purchase, but it surely would have cost a similar amount to a netbook. There’s also an issue of game licensing: would you have to buy games again to use them on the Jungle as well as your home PC?Other devices and services have appeared since the Jungle was first announced that cater for the same situations. OnLive promises to let you play PC games on many devices meaning we could eventually see World of Warcraft streaming to an iPad. Razer also unveiled the Switchblade netbook during CES earlier this year aimed exclusively at gamers on the go.last_img read more
